Jed and the Adjacent possible. A Guesk blog post.

A while back we decided that Meanwhile HQ needed a ‘Guesk’ (that’s a desk for a guest, obviously).

We therefore extended the offer of a desk space, wifi, great coffee (fresh beans delivered every month from our friends at Department of Coffee and Social Affairs) and plenty of stimulus to any clever peeps that needed somewhere to do some thinking or doing in return for a blog post. This is the first. Enjoy.

Jed H Article

Hello, I’m Jed. I work at an advertising agency where I work with brands that want to be more closely acquainted with their customers and employees, using technology. When I’m not doing that, I’m usually making electronica, something I got into about ten years ago when my dad introduced me to The Chemical Brothers. I’ve had a few tracks pressed, but nothing substantial, so when I got asked to produce an EP a few months ago, I decided to take a few days off and pull it all together quite intensely.

The only challenge was finding somewhere with a decent atmosphere, good coffee and some nice people to chat to when I was procrastinating.

While I was writing down endless bars (dives) and coffee shops (too many distractions), I thought I’d call Gabbi Cahane. I’ve known Gabbi for about two years now, but it feels like I’ve known him an eternity, and (me beinga new-ish to London) I knew he’d know of somewhere perfect. He mentioned a few places, and then mentioned the Meanwhile office in Manchester Square. It was perfect. All three criteria in abundance. So I packed everything up and headed over to 1 Manchester Square.

I’ve known the Meanwhile founders for a while, so coming in was like seeing old friends. For three days I toiled away, interspersed with inspiring chats with the office. I’m a massive believer in Steven Johnson’s idea of the adjacent possible (it’s actually an idea borrowed from Stuart Kauffman, but Johnson took it out of the context of theoretical biology). The theory is that in exposing yourself to lots of (seemingly) random thoughts and concepts, you can achieve a higher level clarity and creativity – at least that’s my post-rationalisation for being able to break the back of four tracks in three days.

If you’re looking for somewhere to let your ideas grow, look no further than the Meanwhile offices (and then beg for an invitation!).

Massive thanks to Gabbi and everyone at Meanwhile, I’ll be sure to send you a copy as soon as it’s been pressed.

I also managed to leave about ten different cables with them by accident, still, a lovely excuse to drop in soon.

If you fancy sitting at a Guesk for a bit, then drop us a line with some info on who you are, what you do and what you’ll be working on while your here via email guesk@andmeanwhile.com or twitter @Meanwhile_
